Why Your Resume Layout Matters

Recruiters spend an average of 6 to 8 seconds scanning a resume before deciding whether to reject it or move it to the next round. For freshers, a cluttered or overly designed resume with fancy progress bars and icons is a major red flag. Instead, choose a clean, single-column layout with standard fonts like Inter, Arial, or Calibri. A professional layout ensures that both human recruiters and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) can parse your information easily.

Highlighting Academic Projects and Internships

As a fresher, you may not have years of corporate experience, which is why your academic projects, internships, and volunteer work are your biggest assets. Under the "Projects" section, do not just list the title; explain what you did using action verbs. For example, instead of writing "Built a library website," write "Designed and deployed a responsive library database management system using HTML, CSS, and PHP, reducing search times for 200+ college users." This shows practical implementation and impact.

Structuring the Skills Section Effectively

Group your skills into "Technical Skills" (like Python, SQL, MS Excel, Graphic Design) and "Soft Skills" (like Teamwork, Conflict Resolution, Time Management). Avoid rating your skills using percentage bars or stars, as these are arbitrary and confuse ATS software. Simply list the technologies and tools you have worked with. Make sure to carefully read the job description and include relevant keywords that match the employer's requirements.

Proofreading and Saving Your Resume

Grammatical errors and typos are the easiest way to get your resume rejected. Read through your resume multiple times, or ask a friend to proofread it for you. Double-check all dates, contact numbers, and email addresses. Always save your resume in a standard PDF format unless the job posting explicitly requests a Word document. Name the file professionally, such as "Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf", rather than "Resume_Final_v2.pdf".
