Theory Engineer, Ship Stability

• Helsinki Shipyard is hiring a Theory Engineer, Stability to join its 20-person Naval Architecture team that develops conceptual designs for specialized vessels.
• The role involves intact and damage stability calculations, loading and tank arrangement design, stability-related drawings and manuals, and advising on safe loading and operation.
• Candidates must hold a degree in naval architecture or a related field, have hands-on ship stability calculation experience, strong analytical skills, and good English communication.

We are currently seeking a Theory Engineer, Stability to join our Naval Architecture team of 20 professionals. This team is responsible for the conceptual design of specialized vessels ranging from icebreakers to passenger ships. The team develops initial vessel concepts during the sales phase and collaborates with design teams to finalize the vessel’s design during the construction phase. The typical length of the initial concept development phase is from a few months to a year.

The Theory Engineer, Stability is responsible for vessel stability calculations and related design work. In this role, you will ensure that the vessel meets stability requirements and contribute to defining how the vessel can be safely loaded and operated. You will work closely with Project Engineers and other theory specialists responsible for areas such as weight calculations, CFD, and hull form design.

You also get to work with:

• Intact and damage stability calculations

• Stability-related drawings and technical documentation

• Tank arrangement design and tank volume definition

• Development of the general arrangement in areas related to stability 

• Loading calculations

• Preparation of stability manuals and operational guidance for the vessel

To succeed in this role:

• You hold a degree in naval architecture, maritime engineering, or another relevant field.

• You have a good understanding of naval architecture and vessel stability principles.

• You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• You enjoy collaborating with different engineering disciplines and have good communication skills in English.

• Previous hands-on experience with ship stability calculations is essential for this position.
